History
The Association of Malians of Washington DC, Maryland, and Virginia (AMAW) was founded on May 23, 1991, as a non-profit, community-based organization. Created to foster unity among Malians in the DMV area, AMAW provides a platform for cultural exchange, social connection, and mutual support for those living far from home.
Over the years, AMAW has evolved from a small circle of Malian immigrants into a vibrant community organization serving hundreds of families across Washington, D.C., Maryland, and Virginia. Through cultural events, social gatherings, and support programs, AMAW has become a true home away from home for Malians living in the United States.
Since its founding, the association has been guided by the principles of unity, solidarity, and the preservation of cultural heritage. Our founders envisioned a space where Malians could embrace their identity while successfully adapting to life in America.
Today, AMAW continues to build on this legacy—expanding its reach and services while staying true to its mission: fostering strong connections among Malians in the DMV, promoting cultural pride, and creating a supportive community where we thrive together.

We envision a vibrant Malian community in the DMV that remains deeply connected to its cultural roots while embracing and thriving within American society. Our goal is to serve as a model for how immigrant communities can honor their heritage while making meaningful contributions to their new home.
