History of Mali

From great empires to modern times

8th-11th Century

Ghana Empire

First great empire of West Africa, known for its gold trade and advanced political organization.

13th Century

Mali Empire

Founded by Sundiata Keita, this empire reached its peak under Mansa Musa, the richest man in history.

15th Century

Songhai Empire

Last great empire of the region, famous for its capital Timbuktu, intellectual and commercial center.

1960

Independence

After French colonization, Mali gained its independence on September 22, 1960.
